Then slowly dip your mental paintbrush into black ink and on the first picket paint a clear black A, a B on the second, a C on the third, and so forth. 2. Driving a car.

Most, if not all, of this discomfort can be avoided by following a few simple rules:

(a) Instead of staring at the road ahead-that bemused gaze which is typical of most drivers-practice shifting the gaze from the instrument board to some distant object and back again, blinking frequently as you do so. This exercise encourages rapid accommodation, prevents staring, and relieves tension.

(b) Sit erect with your head up and your eyes looking forward. That is, don't sink your head on your chest and peer upward or look from the side of the eyes. Keep your neck relaxed. It is always a mistake to drive for long distances without changing position. Stop the car, straighten up, pull your neck up high and move your head from side to side, taking deep breaths.

(c) Glance at some distant object-a tree, house, or boulder-and watch it come toward you swiftly.

A few weeks ago I received an excellent question regarding the now famous (or rather, infamous) Girls Gone Wild videos. This doer wanted to know exactly why women behave that way, and if there was anything to learn from it.

Is there anything to learn from watching these videos? Oh my, yes there is—and it is very useful, not just for attracting women, but for understanding how people behave in general.

First off, understand that people (not just women) will do ANYTHING to get on TV. Why? Simply because it makes them feel important. While this goes all the way back to Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” don’t discount the power of people’s desire to feel important.

When Jerry Springer was running at full throttle, there was a mild controversy that the show participants were hired actors. In some ways I wish that were true, but it’s not—all you need to do get people to act like idiots is to invite them to share their stories on national TV and you will get stories not even the best screenwriter could dream up. And these people are eager to share their stories so they can say for the rest of their lives that they were “on TV” and their friends were not.

This is one reason why “girls go wild” on those videos—to make themselves feel important in front of their friends. The lesson here is, if you can make someone feel important, they will want to spend time with you, and will do all kinds of things to keep that feeling.

Here’s another reason why “girls go wild.” If you watch, there’s usually one or two “bad girls” who start the whole thing, and then the more restrained ones join in, even though they’d never start it. Why? Social proof—“because everyone else is doing it, I should do it.”

Social proof is an extremely powerful tool of influence—it’s why the networks use laugh tracks on sitcoms. Because the audience is laughing, you feel like you should be, even if the show is dumb. Although it sounds like it shouldn’t, and we’ve all been cautioned against it, social proof is (and will always be) a powerful tool for influence.

Here’s one more reason girls “go wild” and it has to do with what I refer to as “the frame.” The frame is simply the set of rules governing the interaction. You can take these same set of women, and put them in an office environment, with consequences for mis-behavior and they will not “go wild.” But put them on Spring Break or the beach (in other words, change the frame) and they will “go wild.” It’s simply a matter of changing the frame.

It’s why the severely dressed attorney who wears birth control glasses and puts her hair up in a bun at the office, dresses in tight, skimpy clothes with lots of cleavage, and lets her hair down when she goes out on Saturday night. The frame is changed, and so is her behavior. She’ll do things in that environment that she’d never do in her office.

The thing to keep in mind is this: if a woman is not behaving the way you like, you need to change the frame, the set of rules governing the interaction. She may not “go wild,” (or she might) but she will change her behavior.

Oh yeah, and stay off National TV unless you have a good reason to be there… that stuff sticks around forever, now.

Reading the reports about the dramatic shifts in holiday trends you might expect “stay at home tourism” to be about to take off in a big way.

In the UK the devaluation of the British pound against the Euro has seen many people opting to take holidays in the UK this year. Popular resorts in the south of England are experiencing healthy visitor numbers and the once popular British pastime of caravanning is seeing a resurgence. But for how long will these “old style” holidays satisfy the typical British traveller who has become used to the warm weather of Southern Europe or the excitement of a trip across the Atlantic to the United States?

In other countries the trends are slightly different but exhibit comparable traits. In Germany for example the resorts of the Black Forest and Harz Mountains may become the preferred choices above the most popular destinations in the past of Austria and Italy. Of course the Germans don’t have the same currency issues and therefore may even be tempted to take a trip to the UK to take advantage of the exchange rate shift. However with nearly a quarter of Germans preferring to take a beach holiday, the UK is unlikely to satisfy. The Germans are already quite content to stay at home for their holidays, with over half of all trips booked by Germans being made to home locations, including the resorts on the North Sea and Baltic coasts.

Environmental issues are also affecting the German holiday market. Eco holidays or packages that offer reduced carbon emissions seem to be increasingly in demand. For many, that means forgoing the flight to the resorts of southern Spain and taking a rail or road trip to somewhere closer to home. As the weather continues to play its part, climate change may be a good thing for the German home travel industry.

For the UK holiday maker things are unlikely to be so simple. The UK has experienced a succession of summers recently when the weather has put a dampener on holidays at home. This year could well be the one and only chance the home tourism market has to secure an increase in numbers. Money issues will tempt many families to try out a holiday at a UK resort, either in a hotel or a campsite perhaps. Unless the weather plays its part and delivers warm dry days, that UK audience could easily be lost forever. The UK can be a miserable place for a holiday when the weather is poor.

So what is the price of a decent warm weather holiday? For British people, holidays are very important and many will choose to forgo other luxuries in order to make their foreign holiday affordable. For families going on holiday as a group, the thought of a wet fortnight away during the summer, struggling for things to keep the children occupied, may be a step too far.

So how can the UK family make their usual holiday abroad affordable? Well for many who, so far, have not ventured onto the internet, things could be remarkably easy. Searching and booking a cheap flight, then deciding on a resort and hotel could easily make up for the price increases caused by exchange rate fluctuations. The number of low cost airlines flying to the Canary Islands, for example, has increased recently so the choice of flights is larger than ever before. Another benefit is that these new flights often depart from regional airports, which frequently means a shorter journey from home to the airport, reducing transport costs even further. A further consideration is airport parking, which is often much cheaper at these regional airports when compared to the major airport hubs.

All things considered, the perceived increase in holiday costs may not actually make much difference to typical holiday trends, certainly in the longer term. If weather was not very important then many people would already be choosing to holiday at home. But it obviously is and if money becomes an issue, many people will prefer to solve the financial problem rather than change their travel preferences.

The National Map
As one of the cornerstones of the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Geospatial Program (NGP), The National Map is a collaborative effort among the USGS and other Federal, state, and local partners to improve and deliver topographic information for the Nation. It has many uses ranging from recreation to scientific analysis to emergency response. The National Map is easily accessible for display on the Web, as products, and as downloadable data. The geographic information available from The National Map includes orthoimagery (aerial photographs), elevation, geographic names, hydrography, boundaries, transportation, structures, and land cover. Other types of geographic information can be added to create specific types of maps. Of major importance, The National Map currently is being transformed to better serve the geospatial community.

The USGS National Geospatial Program Office (NGPO) was established to provide leadership for placing geographic knowledge at the fingertips of the Nation. The office supports The National Map, Geospatial One-Stop (GOS), National Atlas of the United States®, and the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC). This integrated portfolio of geospatial information and data supports the essential components of delivering the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) and capitalizing on the power of place.

Electronic Topographic Quadrangle Map As presently envisioned, the 1:24,000-scale topographic map produced from The National Map data will portray contours, hydrography, transportation, boundaries, structures, geographic names, and land cover in the customary 7.5-minute by 7.5-minute quadrangle format. The quality of the map products depends on the accuracy and currentness of the data used to make them. The file format will be georereferenced GeoPDF, GeoTIFF, and ESRI shape. The USGS plans on releasing the first of these maps in a developmental web site in the spring of 2009. Distribution will be in a digital form.


Image Maps The Image Map will be a 7.5-minute by 7.5-minute product based on the best available orthoimage and features content at a 1:24,000-scale. The image will be either natural color or false color infrared. Planned layers include the National Grid, roads, selected structures and/or names, and selected hydrographic data. Every quad is based on North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and shows the three coordinate systems traditionally shown on USGS quadrangle maps: geographic corner coordinates and 2.5-minute tics, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) 1,000-meter grid conforming to the USNG standard, and State Plane Coordinate System (SPCS) ticks. The file format will be standard PDF, georereferenced GeoPDF, GeoTIFF and ESRI shape. The first of these products should be available in the fall of 2008 and will be available for sale and download through the online USGS Store at: http://store.usgs.gov/.

Research also is underway to create a "custom map" service that would allow users to re-center, resize, and add layers to the map. User-created maps will adhere to the same basic product standards and be available in the same formats as the standard products. Current plans forecast a prototype custom map service available in early 2010.

In addition to being an important contribution to the NSDI, The National Map is foundational to implementation of the Department of the Interior (DOI) Geospatial Modernization Blueprint and meeting the DOI mission to protect America's treasures for future generations, provide access to our nation's natural and cultural heritage, offer recreation opportunities, honor our trust responsibilities, conduct scientific research, provide wise stewardship of energy and mineral resources, foster sound use of land and water resources, and conserve and protect fish and wildlife. The National Map also underpins the USGS Science Strategy which is based on a systems approach to help address multi-faceted issues, provide better understanding of earth processes and evaluate broad causes and consequences of the use and management of natural resources.

America is putting its economy at peril if it fails to seize the lead in electric and hybrid car technology, former Vice President Al Gore warns in a posting on his blog today.

Gore cited a recent New York Times story that notes that Chinese leaders have embarked on a three-year plan to become the leading producers of electric and gas-electric hybrid vehicles.

"Our security crisis, our economic crisis and our climate crisis are all connected," Gore wrote. "By leading the world in the creation of renewable technology, we will not only put America back to work, but we can also reduce our dependence on foreign oil and help solve the climate crisis."

He added that if "we allow other nations to take the lead in developing the technologies of the future, we would put our entire economy at risk for the next generation." His opinion roughly follows President Barack Obama's rhetoric on the issue, but with the U.S. auto industry in crisis, economic issues have taken precedent over alternative-power development lately.

Weather-permitting, most days I take a lunchtime stroll each day from my office, located in close proximity to the corner of Grandview Avenue and 3rd avenue, and denoted by the blue marker found in Figure 1. I walk down to the corner of Grandview Avenue and 5th Avenue, and then double back to the office. How can the distance between these two corners be determine programmatically?

For starters, a way to plot the two points on the map is needed. To do so, the Google Maps API can be used to add a listener, which will constantly poll the status of the rendered map, waiting for a particular event to occur, such as a mouse click. Clicking the mouse on top of the map will cause the listener to execute another JavaScript method. This listener can be embedded within the load() function, which automatically executes thanks to the onload() event handler attached to the page's tag. The load() JavaScript function and two variables that will be used throughout the script looks like this:

By now everything in this function should be familiar, except for the last line. The GEvent.addListener() method attaches a click listener to the map object, which will cause a function named addMarker() to execute should the user click on the map.

Next the addMarker() function will be created. This function is responsible for responding to the listener by placing a marker at the location where the user clicked the mouse, and append the new marker's coordinates to the coordinates array. If the user previously added another marker by way of this function, addMarker() will also draw a line between the new and old marker.

Finally, a way is needed to calculate the distance between the two charted points. Because this is such a commonplace feature, the GoogleMapAPI PHP library used in previous articles offers a built-in method for calculating this distance. It can even do so using a variety of units, including miles (the default), kilometers, nautical miles, inches, and feet. Naturally, the calculation should be performed in a user-friendly fashion, which these days involves using a bit of Ajax to make the distance calculation a seamless process.
